Starting my Muse Session

There are lots of experiences in the Muse app for you to explore in your practice with Muse.

This article covers everything about starting any session with your Muse headband once you have the Muse app installed.

Connecting my Muse to the Muse app

Make sure your Apple iOS or Android device's Bluetooth is turned on.

  1. Open the Muse app and tap the Train tab.

  2. Tap the Bluetooth icon in the top left corner.

  3. Turn on your Muse.

  4. Tap your Muse ID when it appears.

  5. Done! You should now be connected by Bluetooth*, and now’s a great time to wear your Muse.

After the first time you connect your Muse by Bluetooth, the Muse app will try to automatically connect to your Muse going forward.

*If you’re having trouble connecting to Bluetooth, see our Bluetooth Troubleshooting article for tips.

Setting up for my session

For Muse biofeedback sessions, it’s strongly recommended you sit in a comfortable, upright position with your eyes slightly closed. Muse is a sensitive device and will pick up even the small electrical activity from muscles around the eyes, jaw, and the brainwaves from visual processing (what you see), and this can impact your session data.

To learn more about calibration and how to set up for consistent results, view our Best Setup When Using Muse article.

For Muse sleep sessions, lie down in whatever position is most comfortable for you.

Our article Comparing Muse Experiences provides information on the differences between Muse features and biofeedback experiences.

For this example, let's try a Mind Biofeedback session:

  1. Open the Muse app and tap the Train tab.

  2. Scroll down to Biofeedback Soundscapes and tap Mind.

  3. Tap any of the soundscapes (such as Rainforest) to download the content.

  4. Select how long you'd like your session to last. (You can always extend your session after the timer completes.)

  5. Tap the Start Session button.

  6. Complete the sensor quality check* and begin your session.

*Muse will automatically try to get good sensor quality as soon as you wear it and connect it by Bluetooth.

Having trouble getting good sensor quality? Tips can be found in our Sensor Quality Troubleshooting article. Muse S (Gen 2) users should also view our Assembling and Fitting My Muse article for additional guidance.
