Using Headphones with Muse

Muse headbands don’t provide audio. Muse connects to your Android or Apple device by Bluetooth, and your device provides the audio.

Headphones are not included with the purchase of Muse.

 

Audio Device Compatibility

You can use any audio device connected to your Apple or Android device including:

• Wired or wireless earbuds such as Apple AirPods

• Wired or wireless over-ear headphones

• Wireless speakers

• The built-in speaker on your mobile device
   

💡 Note that the Muse sensors need contact with the skin on top and behind your ears (like eyeglasses). If you’re using over-ear headphones, it can take some extra adjustment to get good sensor quality.

💡 Deep Sleep Boost has a specific setting that must be toggled on ONLY if you use wireless Bluetooth audio device while sleeping. Learn more here.

 

Audio Device Recommendations

You may notice the photos on our website have people using their Muse with Apple AirPods. We use these images to show that Muse has an audio experience, but we don’t necessarily recommend Apple AirPods.

Our recommendation is that you choose an audio setup that’s most comfortable for you!

 

Audio Troubleshooting

The audio of your Muse experience is controlled by your audio device, which is connected to your Apple or Android device.

Here are some common tips for troubleshooting audio:

• For instructions on how to adjust the Muse app’s in-session volume settings, see our Adjusting Session Length and Volume article.

• After opening the Muse app, make sure the physical sound controls of your Apple or Android device are turned up high enough.

• If you're using a wireless Bluetooth audio device, it’s important to pair it before launching the Muse app.

• If your audio is turned up, but you still don't hear any sound, this may be caused by the Apple or Android being connected to another wireless audio device, such as a wireless speaker.

• Try "forgetting" other Bluetooth audio devices connected to your device's Bluetooth settings. If you're able to hear audio through your device speaker, try reconnecting the Bluetooth devices to your device.
