How the Sleep Experiences WorkCombining Sleep ExperiencesSleep Experience FAQs How the Sleep Experiences Work Start your session and customize the experience that work best for you. The Muse app will remember your preferences for future sessions. You can mix and match features or use them individually. Silent TrackingSleep AssistDeep Sleep BoostSleep SoundsPlaying My Own Audio Silent Tracking Sometimes called sleep tracking only, this is the default option with all other sleep experiences turned off. No audio will play, and there are no interventions. Muse will simply track your sleep until you wake and end the session. How it helps: Everyone’s sleep needs are different. Tracking only allows you to monitor your unassisted sleep, giving insight into your natural sleep patterns. Why it matters: Accurate tracking is the foundation of sleep improvement. By measuring your unassisted sleep, you can see the impact of lifestyle changes, bedtime routines, or Muse sleep features. Sleep Assist Sleep Assist plays calming audio as Muse detects wakefulness, helping you fall asleep faster. Use the Go-back-to-sleep setting to automatically restart the audio if you wake during the night. How it helps: Gentle audio guides you from wakefulness to sleep, reducing the time it takes to fall asleep. Why it matters: Consistent use can help train your brain to associate calming audio with sleep, helping you fall asleep faster to improve overall sleep duration and quality. Key Sleep Assist Settings: Toggle on Sleep Assist and tap the settings icon Turn on Go-back-to-sleep, enabling the sleep assist content to return if you wake up during the night. Customize the fade-out and fade-in speed, and test these settings with “Simulate sleep” to find what’s right for you. Deep Sleep Boost Deep Sleep Boost uses whisper-quiet, EEG-timed audio cues to enhance natural deep-sleep cycles. When Muse detects deep sleep, soft pink-noise pulses are played in time with your brainwaves. If Muse detects the audio is disrupting your sleep (e.g., triggering arousals or unnatural patterns), it will automatically turn off the pulses so you rest uninterrupted. How it helps: These subtle cues reinforce slow-wave (deep) sleep, which is critical for physical recovery and memory consolidation. Why it matters: Deep sleep is essential for feeling rested and supporting cognitive function. Boosting deep sleep can help you wake up feeling refreshed and restore your body more effectively Key Deep Sleep Boost settings: Toggle on Deep Sleep Boost and tap the settings icon Enable the Bluetooth Audio setting if you’re using a wireless BT audio device with Muse. Adjust and preview the volume of Deep Sleep Boost to maximize the benefit to your deep sleep. Sleep Sounds These are non-responsive music, stories, or guided relaxations that play for 30 minutes. Enable the repeat option to play continuously. Sleep Sounds can be used alone or layered with Sleep Assist or Deep Sleep Boost. How it helps: Some people may find changes in audio are disruptive to their sleep. Sleep sounds give you the benefit of audio assisted sleep and sleep tracking all in one system. Why it matters: A stable, familiar, or soothing audio environment can reduce nighttime anxiety and disturbances, helping you fall asleep more easily and stay asleep for more restorative, uninterrupted rest. Key Sleep Sounds settings: Toggle on Sleep Sounds and adjust the settings. Tap the Sleep Sounds settings icon to adjust your session volume. Tap the repeat icon to play the Sleep Sounds content on repeat. Playing My Own Audio Enabled with a Muse Premium subscription, you can listen to your own audio experience through another app. Go to the Sleep tab and tap Start Sleep Session. After the sensor check, go to your audio app or other external content. Play your preferred audio, then return to the Muse app to continue your sleep session. Done! Combining Sleep Experiences Muse sleep experiences are designed to be flexible. Some features work best on their own, while others can be layered thoughtfully to support different stages of sleep—falling asleep, staying asleep, or deepening rest. Sleep Assist + Deep Sleep Boost Sleep Assist supports the transition from wakefulness to sleep, while Deep Sleep Boost activates later, once deep sleep is detected. This pairing supports both falling asleep and sleep quality, helping you ease into sleep and reinforce restorative deep-sleep cycles without additional effort. Sleep Sounds + Deep Sleep Boost Sleep Sounds provide a steady, non-responsive audio backdrop, while Deep Sleep Boost adds subtle, EEG-timed cues during deep sleep. The consistent sound environment can mask disruptions, while Deep Sleep Boost works quietly in the background to support deeper rest—without changing the audio you’re already comfortable with. Sleep Assist + Deep Sleep Boost + Sleep Sounds These experiences support different phases of sleep. Sleep Assist helps you transition from wakefulness into sleep, while Sleep Sounds create a steady, calming backdrop. As you sleep, Deep Sleep Boost activates quietly when slow-wave activity is detected, reinforcing deeper, more restorative sleep without interrupting your audio experience.Together, they support falling asleep, staying asleep, and improving sleep quality—without requiring extra effort or adjustments during the night. When not to combine: Avoid pairing two spoken or narrative experiences (such as a Sleep Assist story and a Sleep Sound journey with narration), as overlapping voices can be distracting rather than relaxing.
